With pony and donkey rides and a petting zoo, face painting, a flying fox, friends and family, tamariki were in their element of having fun.

We love repurposing resources at Giggles. In this case, tamariki love creating pictures from the sand we coloured to make Rangoli designs at our Giggles Diwali celebration this year.

Leading on from a glorious weekend of summer-like weather, Monday proved that clear skies and sunshine were perfect conditions for teamwork. Over the weekend the lawns were mown, and the outside equipment moved around. Tamariki decided that they wanted the large buoy inside the tyre centres, and with muscle power, might and team commitment, they succeeded.

After a beautiful weekend of spring weather, our Monday weather was a little unpredicatable. We were outside as the sun struggled through the greyish clouds, then inside as a downpour of rain thundered outside.
As the rain poured, tamariki painted. This time they chose cottonballs as their painting tool, to dip and paint with.

Blowing bubbles is something from our own childhood, and children of all ages love watching the science behind creating bubbles. In the past we’ve created huge bubbles down on our ‘green’ play area. But today, tamariki are creating small bubbles, lots of small bubbles.
Blowing down a straw into a mixture of detergent and glycerin (glycerol) creates bubbles which stick together and last longer.

After Labour Weekend, we came back on Tuesday relaxed. Whaea Jagmeet and tamariki gathered all the ingredients together to make stuffed roti with cheese, onion and silverbeet for lunch.

We are so excited to be celebrating Diwali this week. At the start of this week we were visited by Fairhaven School’s Indian Dance Group, who showed us a couple of their dances. Throughout the rest of the week, we will be preparing for Thursday, where we are hosting Giggles Diwali Celebration Day.

This week is our first Civil Defence Week at Giggles, where we’ve invited along guests to come and chat with us about how we look after ourselves and each other in an emergency.
Our guests are from Te Puke Response Team, St John Ambulance and NZ Police. Plus, we’ll also be visiting Te Puke Fire Station.

Another exciting Monday morning, where we battled the gusty wind and picked silverbeet as an extra ingredient for our roti. Next step, cutting the silverbeet into small pieces to blend through the roti dough.

Cooking lunch is a great learning experience. From boiling the eggs, to waiting until they are cooled to tapping them open and cracking off the egg shells. To picking the herbs, cooking the ingredients, rolling out the roti for cooking. So much love from tamariki and kaiako goes into cooking our lunches. It’s truly a team effort!

The chickens were busy over the weekend, they laid fifteen eggs. So today, we made a yummy quiche with their eggs. The fun part was collecting the eggs.

We’re not too sure which chicken is laying the eggs, but it doesn’t matter. Every morning we go down to the chicken coup and are surprised to see how many eggs have been laid over night (or in the morning).

Its a beautiful to see older tamariki sitting with our younger tamariki and talking about what they see in a book. Literacy is embedded in everything we do here at Giggles, from storytelling, to being creative, playing down on our huge playground, to socialising and communicating.

This week we started off with a frost in the morning. Monday saw tamariki down on the green in the morning breaking up ice in the frozen over puddles on the bike track.

This week we start out with a manual paper shredder, which tamariki have had a go at. It takes practice to guide the piece of paper into the shredder, then winding the handle to shred the paper.
